Re: How Many ?
Mon, March 26, 2007 - 2:56 PMhey jim. i live in toronto and during the summer i work at a market farm about two hours away. during the summer, i return to the city for three days a week to maintain my clients (i own my own business) and spend the other four days at markets near the farm or working on the farm. i am contemplating moving my business out to the farm but i am not sure about the viability of that plan.
how about you? -

Re: How Many ?
Mon, March 26, 2007 - 8:15 PMI was the youngest of 7 in the family, My Dad nd Mom had a cattel farm, and we raised beef. We also raised the nesisaries tto sustain us for the entire year. from year to year. Very seldom did our family eat of store bought stuf. Cured out own hams and put up and froze our fegies and fruits ect.
I am now a trucker by trade , although my 27yr. sucnificant other and I do our own gardening, as we only have a home on 2.5 acres , and we live in the country. Our driveway is 950' long as we are behind our neighbors grain farm. He and his wife have about 354 acres. on wich I park my rig when I am home.

Re: How Many ?
Mon, March 26, 2007 - 3:50 PMHi Jim,
I grew up on a veal farm until age 16, and since college off and on have been working summers on a berry farm near where I grew up. I will have my own farm very soon. As I have tried out different career paths, I see more and more that "farmer" is really the career I am best cut out for. I love to recycle and reuse, build and fix most things myself, am not afraid to make my own parts, don't like to have a boss, can't punch a time clock, rather have the experience of doing something wrong and then figure it out than paying to be "certified", love the outdoors, wow, there are really just so many things about it I dig!!!! Hooorray for farm fags!!!!!

Mon, March 26, 2007 - 10:11 PMWhen I was young, my Mother and I lived with my Grandparents and they were farmers, and I really thought for the longest that everyone lived liked us with the garden and the cows and stuff. Now my Grandmother did have a lot on her at the time and Grandaddy did start buying butter and milk and stuff from the store. My mother still canning and putting stuff in the freezer, her and my uncle now do sell some of the veg's that they do not put up. -

Re: How Many ?
Mon, August 20, 2007 - 6:31 AMGreat question, Jim! I grew up on a dairy farm, went away to college, HATED the city.......... now live on about 5 acres, but surrounded by huge spreads. Help on those when they need it, and have the usual chickens/goats here, so I feel like I am "farming." *grin* And of course I love looking out and seeing the cornfields all around me. Farmers ALWAYS get my attention, and I LOVE walking around the feed store. (first M/M experience was at the top of the silo (inside on the silage) *grin* Smell of that stuff really gets me going.......... Awesome group here. Woofs to you all.

Re: How Many ?
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 5:44 PMJIM:
I was born and raised on a northeast Nebraska farm--a farm of Holstein cows, Leghorn chickens, Hampshire hogs, fields of oats, corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and Allis Chalmers tractors. I left the farm during college years; but I still have a lot of "farm" in me now living in northern California with an acreage of 500 bearded irises in a landscaped setting and some bantam chickens. With each succeeding year of life, I appreciate my "farm roots" more and more. -

Wed, December 5, 2007 - 10:06 PMWill:
Hello--nice to have you respond.
The farm was not huge--my parents only owned 120 acres; but we rented another quarter of a section. As a boy I milked cows by hand and went to a country school--the old one room type. We never miked more than a dozen cows at peak. I can still remember when we switched from hand milking to milking machines. By the time I entered high school, it became tough for my parents to keep up financially --so they both went to work in nearby home town. The milk cows went by the way side but Dad continued to raise Hereford steers to sell for slaughter.
Where were you farm raised? i have not had a chance to study all the replies and postings here. Were you ever in Nebraska? -

Re: How Many ?
Thu, December 6, 2007 - 3:57 AMhallo. i am from canada. i don't recall ever being in nebraska, but i have been to many states, mostly the eastern seaboard, the southern states and a couple of the southwestern states. i was not farm raised but city raised. in my late 30s i discovered that i was a country boy stuck in a city boy's body. i work on a chemical free exotic and heirloom veggie farm in the summer. we do everything by hand. a shit load of work, but i really like it. -
-
Re: How Many ?
Thu, December 6, 2007 - 8:05 AMYou work on an interesting type veggie farm. I have heard of those a number of times (brief time I lived in Oregon) but never visited one.
I understand the "shitload of work" routine--I work very hard here in the hot sun (this is one of the hotter areas of California in the summertime); but I love it. It keeps me vital and strong. Have you ever known any bearded iris growers in your life? Bearded irises do perform well in the Toronto area. I have hybridized the irises for several years and introduced abut 12 varieties--the latest one (late 1990's) registered as FJORD. Do you do any hobby gardening or plant raising on the side or care for any animals? -

Re: How Many ?
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 4:03 AMhi roger!
i know flower growers, but i don't recall any of them growing bearded irises. although, my front lawn in the city has a couple of bulbs in it.
wow! introducing 12 varieties? that's a feat in my books. friends have been working on introducing roses for a number of years, without any substantial success. most excellent for you!
other than me, there are no animals on the farm. hobby gardening? i have a wee patch at my house in the city. you?
