Hi all, just wanted to say hi and introduce myself, Just joined the tribe along with my partner Amulet. We have two acres of Redwood forest in northen California where we raise heritage breed chickens, and have a huge vegetable garden. Nice to see that there are others out there that share the same interests.

Sat, May 28, 2005 - 1:20 PMHey D Guy, what breeds do you have, and what does it take for a chicken breed to be considered heritage? I have 3 aracauna mutts and one brown RIR type mutt, but when I have more room, I'm hoping to get the ornamental layers collection from Mc Murray. -

Sat, May 28, 2005 - 1:45 PMHi Hen,
Herritage breeds are old breeds that are in jeopardy of becoming extinct. A great site is Society for the Preservation of Poultry at antiquitieswww.feathersite.com/Poultry/...SPPA.html
Many old obscure breeds are listed there, many that I never have even heard of. I raise Welsummers, Golden Sebrights and Old English Game Bantams.. I do have 3 old "Easter eggers" that are my original birds since I got back into the hobby.
I was looking at the Mc Murray Ornamental collection myself, but thought better of it, I need to keep my focus :-) -

Wed, June 1, 2005 - 11:37 AMDid you get your breeds from a local Northern California hatchery or did you order? I haven't even heard of your breeds. I checked out the feathersite website you listed and was amazed by the diversity of breeds. I have a buff orpington & aruacana. -

Wed, June 1, 2005 - 3:14 PMHi Rodney,
I purchased the welsummers from a breeder in Florida last july, after finding out about the breed.. I had never heard of it before. I was researching Marans and discovered the Welsummers. The Sebrights were purchased from Privett Hatchery in New Mexico and then additional birds from a breeder in Montana. The Old English have been purchased from TN and OR. this year I have just been hatching all my own stock in a cabinet incubator I built.... Like I need anymore birds LOL
